WHAT I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME ABOUT FINANCES

Dear community, We’re about to close another chapter. December always brings lights, celebrations, and good wishes, but it’s also the perfect invitation to pause, look back, and reflect: how did 2025 go compared to what we expected at the start of the year? What goals did we achieve, what lessons did we learn, and what financial decisions would we have made differently?
Because it’s not just about ending “another year”, but about turning this closing into a real opportunity for growth. This is the ideal time to ask ourselves:
What could we improve when it
comes to managing our finances?
What habits should we leave behind?
What new practices could we adopt to design a stronger future?
The key lies in focusing on what we can control: our spending, our savings, the protection of our health and assets, and abo ve all, our ability to plan with vision.
FINANCES BEYOND MATHEMATICS
Over time, I’ve discovered that finances aren’t just about numbers or budgets. If it were only about adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing, we’d all have perfect finances. But reality is different, there’s a much stronger factor influen cing our decisions: our emotions.
According to the National Survey of Fi nancial Inclusion (ENIF, 2021), in Mexico, only 4 out of 10 adults track their expenses, and more than 60% admit that their financial decisions are influenced by their mood or social pressure. In other words, we spend impulsively out of anxiety, or just to “fit in.” That’s why financial education must also include emotional education.
PLANNING: A PILLAR FOR ENDING AND STARTING WITH CLARITY
I wish someone had told me that money is an ally, and that strategic planning isn’t about res triction, it’s about peace of mind. Saving and inves ting aren’t easy, but they are possible when done with intention.
According to the OECD, only 25% of Mexi cans save formally, and many do so irregularly. This shows us that knowing math isn’t enough, we need discipline, vision, and consistency.
INSURANCE: CERTAINTY AMID UNCERTAINTY
We’re also not told enough about insurance as a pillar of stability. A health insurance policy, for ins tance, can prevent a family from falling into years of debt. Yet, the National Council for Financial Inclusion reports that only 16% of Mexicans have one, even though medical expenses are the leading cause of household debt.
INSURANCE ISN’T AN EXPENSE, it’s the assurance that what we’ve worked so hard to build will remain protected.
“…THERE’S A MUCH STRONGER FACTOR INFLUENCING OUR DECISIONS: OUR EMOTIONS.”
SAVING YOUNG: A GIFT TO YOUR FUTURE SELF
Another vital point is early saving. As young people, we often chase material things; the car, the trip, the newest phone. But rarely do we think about the adults we’ll eventually become.
According to CONSAR, if we start saving at age 25, we can double what we’d accumulate by starting at 35. What seems like a small effort today becomes peace and freedom decades later. Saving from your very first paycheck isn’t a burden, it’s an act of self-love toward your future self.
And the best part is that today, there are accessible tools to build your retirement. You can choose options that include life insurance, with flexible terms, many people like 15 or 20 year plans where savings continue to grow even after payments end, or more flexible plans wi thout insurance starting from $2,000 MXN per month, investing in index funds that generate long-term returns.
These kinds of alternatives are the per fect bridge between present discipline and fu ture freedom.
Today I know that financial health isn’t measured in accumulated pesos, but in the peace we live with and in the certainty that what matters most is protected. Strategic plan ning, insurance, early savings, and emotional management form the formula for a fuller life.
So, let’s not approach this year’s end with wi shes alone. Let’s take action and review what we did well, what we can improve, and what we should im plement to build a strong 2026.
I wish someone had told me that every cons cious financial decision is a seed that grows with time and that we’re never alone on this path. We can always learn, adjust, and begin again.

BECAUSE THE BEST TIME TO SOW CERTAINTY IS TODAY.
It’s a pleasure to greet you, dear community. I invite you to design a better future together. If you’d like to take action, we can schedule a Zoom meeting where we’ll share practical tools and build strategies to close this year strong and start the next one with vision and clarity.
